1. What Are Cookies?
Cookies are small text files placed on your device when you visit a website. Similar technologies include pixels, web beacons, local storage and software development kits (SDKs) in the Mahi app. We refer to all of these as “cookies”.
2. Why We Use Cookies
We use cookies to make the Platform work, keep you signed in, remember your preferences, understand how our website and app are used, measure the performance of our marketing and keep the Platform secure.
3. Types of Cookies We Use
| Category | Purpose | Consent needed? |
|---|---|---|
| Strictly necessary | Log-in sessions, security, fraud prevention, payment flow, remembering your cookie choice | No |
| Functional | Language, region, saved preferences, video player settings | Yes |
| Analytics and performance | Counting visitors, pages and lessons viewed, app crashes, understanding what to improve | Yes |
| Marketing and advertising | Measuring ad performance, retargeting on social platforms, linking enquiries to campaigns | Yes |
Session cookies expire when you close your browser. Persistent cookies remain for a set period, usually between 30 days and 24 months.
4. Third-Party Cookies
Some cookies are set by third parties such as analytics providers, social media platforms (for example Meta and TikTok pixels), video hosts, payment providers and embedded content. These providers have their own privacy and cookie policies, which we do not control.
5. Your Choices and Consent
5.1 When you first visit our website you will see a cookie banner. Except for strictly necessary cookies, we place cookies only after you consent, in line with the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 and UK GDPR (our primary framework) and the data protection laws of Ethiopia, the Republic of Benin, Nigeria and Ghana, as applicable.
5.2 You can accept all, reject non-essential cookies, or choose by category. You can change your choice at any time through the “Cookie settings” link in the website footer.
5.3 You can also control cookies through your browser settings (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge) and delete existing cookies. In the Mahi app, you can adjust tracking permissions in your device settings. Blocking some cookies may affect how the Platform performs.
5.4 We honour browser “Do Not Track” and Global Privacy Control signals where technically feasible.
6. Cookie Data and Privacy
Where cookies collect personal data, we process it as described in our Privacy Policy and keep it only as long as needed for the purposes above.
7. How Long Cookies Last
7.1 Session cookies. These expire when you close your browser.
7.2 Persistent cookies. These stay on your device for a set period or until you delete them. Most advertising and analytics cookies last from a few days up to about two years, depending on the provider.
8. How to Manage Cookies in Your Browser
8.1 Browser settings. Most browsers let you view, block and delete cookies. Look for “Privacy” or “Cookies” in your browser’s settings.
8.2 Effect of blocking. If you block all cookies, some parts of the website may not work as expected.
8.3 Mobile devices. On phones and tablets you can also limit ad tracking in the device’s privacy settings.
9. Similar Technologies
9.1 Pixels and tags. We may use small pieces of code, such as pixels and tags, that work like cookies to measure whether an advert or page led to an action.
9.2 Local storage. We may store small pieces of data in your browser, such as your preferences, to make the website work better.
10. Updates and Contact
We may update this Cookie Policy when we change the technologies we use or when the law changes. The updated version will be posted here with a new effective date. Questions: management@mahiinstitute.com.
